Why is this information Important
Did you know that swimming is the second most popular exercise
activity in the United States, with approximately 360 million annual visits to
recreational water venues such as pools, spas, wading pools, water slides and
other swimming places? Unfortunately, the number of Recreational Water Illnesses
(RWIs) are increasing and there is low public awareness of the problem. RWI’s
are illnesses associated with swimming at water venues with the most common
illness being diarrhea caused by germs in the water. The Environmental
Management Department would like to be at the forefront with efforts to combat
RWIs this swim season and provide the information only a click away.
Information You Can Use
The County Environmental Management Department (EMD) in an
ongoing effort to raise awareness about the potential for spread of infectious
RWIs at swimming venues (public/private swimming pools, streams, rivers, lakes
and oceans) is providing information to owners of swimming facilities and
swimmers. Although this information is primarily intended for those that swim,
use, own, manage, operate, or work at pools, watermarks, hot tubs, and spas it
may be useful to the public as well.
Information to reduce RWIs
Our aim is to provide you with information and prevention
methods to decrease the number of RWI’s. EMD staff inspects public swimming
pools and spas (for public health and safety) in Sacramento County, including
the cities of Sacramento, Folsom, Isleton, Galt, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove and
Rancho Cordova. Please click on the links below for further targeted information
on combating RWI’s:
