The Sacramento County Food
Protection Program, part of the Environmental
Health (EH) Division of the Environmental Management
Department, is responsible for the enforcement of
State and Local health codes at all retail food
facilities in Sacramento County (including all
incorporated cities.) The enforcement of these codes
is conducted through the following activities:
-
Permitting and inspection of retail food
businesses including restaurants, bars, markets,
school cafeterias, bakeries, mini-marts and
convenience stores, mobile food vendors, and
special/temporary event booths.
-
Providing food safety education and training to
improve compliance with food safety regulations
and reduce the incidence of foodborne illness.
-
Investigation of complaints regarding food safety
and sanitation violations at retail food
facilities
-
Investigation of suspected cases of foodborne
illness.

A new group of Food Protection Program Enhancements was
approved by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors in May 2006, that went into effect on January 1, 2007. The most noticeable change
is the
requirement that retail food facilities display at their entrance or other
prominent location a placard that shows the results of their most recent
inspection. The placards will be green (for 'pass'), yellow (for
'conditional pass') or red (for 'closed').
Other enhancements include more frequent food inspections for potentially
higher-risk retail food facilities. Generally these are facilities that do their
own food preparation, rather than just selling pre-packaged food. The
Environmental Health Division will also be conducting educational
workshops for Retail Food Facility operators to assist with compliance
issues.
For more details please visit the
EMD Food Program Enhancements page.

-
Retail food facilities in Sacramento County are
currently required to maintain a copy of their
most recent inspection report at the facility
and make it available upon request. The
inspection report itself does not have to be
posted, but the Food Inspection
Placard must be posted in a location that is
visible to the public prior to entering the
facility. For specific posting
requirements, please see the
Food Placard Posting Compliance Assistance
Bulletin.

EMD has also increased the
availability of food facility inspection
information by making the inspection results and
the inspection reports available on EMD's
Food Inspection Search page,
www.foodinspect.saccounty.net. The inspection
reports available here - in Adobe Acrobat
format- are the same ones that are available at each facility.
-
Increasing compliance through education by
requiring that food handlers at non-compliant
food facilities attend a Food
Safety Education (FSE) class. The cost is $20.00 per person.
Please call 916-875-1715 to enroll in the
class or to receive the current class schedule,
or visit the Food
Safety Education page for a current class
schedule.
-
To assist retail food facilities with
understanding the conditions under which the Food
Safety Education (FSE) class
may be required, EMD has prepared a
Food Safety Education Compliance Assistance
Bulletin
which answers many common questions about this
new requirement.
-
EMD
issues annual
Awards
of Excellence in Food Safety where food
facilities that have shown a pattern of
excellent compliance over a period of time are
recognized with a certificate. Click on the link
to view more information and a list of the
current recipients.
-
EMD publishes a list of recent
Retail Food
Facility Closures, which is updated weekly.
